The Full Story

SocksForSmiles is a non profit organization that was founded by three high school girls this month. Lucy Sharp, Maddy Niven and Korenza Heath are hoping to make children in hospital a little bit happier and a little bit more hopeful. Making a smile appear on their face is our goal. We have participated in other charity events such as the Cancer Society's Relay for Life, and the World Vision 40 hour famine.

'I created SocksForSmiles as a way of giving back. I had cancer twice, once when I was 13 and again at 14. Socks were something that I loved during my journey and always gave me something to smile about. I am always wanting to give back. Being in hospital can be a scary thing and sometimes you just need a pick me up. I’m so happy to be able to start this and also have my friends behind me.' - Lucy Sharp (@lucysharpxx)

'When Lucy came to me and said she wanted to help teens in hospital I knew I wanted to help. That is how I became a cofounder of SocksForSmiles. Cancer has been a big part of Lucy’s life and I think it is so cool how she wants to give back to the community. We wanted to make a non-profit organisation that was enjoyable for us to run and god knows we all love socks. Lucy and I both have massive boxes of them. We thought it would be cool if we could sell socks and then from the money we made gave a pair of socks and some extra little gifts to a teenager in hospital. 'I wanted to start 'SocksForSmiles' because I’ve been affected by cancer and illness a lot; my cousin was sick when she was little and obviously with Lucy being ill too. I just wanted to try and make a difference, I wanted to make people happy. I remember being bored and just generally not enjoying myself when I got my appendix out, but that doesn’t even come close to what some girls and boys have to go through. Socks were the things Lucy brought me when she came to see me in hospital so it seemed only right that socks were going to be our thing too! :)' - Korenza Heath (@heathkorenza)

'Socks for smiles is an amazing foundation, it’s so inspirational that a bunch of teens have started an organisation for something many adults wouldn’t think twice about, this organisation is a way to give kids in hospitals a little bit of hope. I wanted to help out because when I heard about SocksForSmiles I knew it would be a great way to put a bunch of smiles on teenagers faces, it’s a way to really impact those teens lives and give them more hope each day.'
